Chapin's Significance

Chapin had a large effect on the United States. State health departments and those of the larger cities built up elaborate arrangements for public health education. (20) More specifically, in New York, the health departments built a health bureau that was responsible for handing out bulletins to the public. (21) He inspired others to evaluate all of the collective efforts of community hygiene in terms of outcomes, an early effort to quantify the social sciences aspect of public-health practice. (22)He led successful community hygiene practices to combat the flu epidemic of 1918 in Providence. These included the ideas mentioned in this famously published book The Mode and Transmission of Disease. (23)
His effect was not just subjected to the United States, he also had a global effect. Medical missionaries carried out his ideas to countries such as China, where they formed the basis of much of the preventive medicine taught in the Western-sponsored medical colleges. (24)Thus, building a stronger medical practice across the world. In Europe specifically, alert doctors heard about the new ideas and sought to interest the authorities in their countries. (25) |
